Why Does My Cat Do That? Curious Cat Behaviors Explained

It seems like the internet is simply full of funny cat videos, doesn’t it? Even people that aren’t self-proclaimed cat lovers admit to enjoying feline antics once in awhile, and why wouldn’t they? They’re funny, adorable, amazing, and unpredictable. While it may be fun to sit back and marvel at various cat behaviors, it’s important to be able to recognize the difference between the amusing ones and the potential warning signs.

So Weird!

Expounding on the full extent of funny or odd cat behaviors could take awhile. There are just so many! You might see some familiar ones on the list below, or your cat might be a trendsetter with their very own idiosyncrasies. Either way, cats are clear contenders in the animal antics department.

• Cats love cardboard boxes, no matter the size, often preferring them to expensive, comfortable-looking cat beds. In fact, the smaller the box the better.
• The Flehmen Response helps cats hone in on a puzzling scent, but it’s awfully funny to watch (they aren’t the only animals that can do this, but they are the best at it!)
• Many cats enjoy knocking things over, like glasses full of water, potted plants, and bottles just to, you know, see what happens.
• Head-butting, a common form of showing affection among cats and their people, is among the most endearing cat behaviors.
• Chirping at intended prey through a window or door is a common reaction to possible frustration at not being able to hunt.
• When you scoop the litter and there is a large pile of feces uncovered, it’s a sign of dominance (especially if you have multiple cats).
• Purring, the ultimate sign of satisfaction and comfort, is achieved while snuggling, but it can also be observed when a cat is in pain.
• Kneading, or making biscuits, is arguably one of the best cat behaviors out there. As a way to bring their mother’s milk down, they associate this action with all things good, rewarding, and warm.
• Did you know that cats don’t meow to each other? In other words, if a cat is “talking” to you, you must be absolutely worth their time!

Other Cat Behaviors

As we said, purring can be employed as a self-soother when a cat is ill or injured. There are other cat behaviors that may appear on the surface as “normal”, but upon closer inspection, they are warning you. It’s always important to pay special attention to even the subtlest signs that your cat isn’t well in part because they are so adept at masking their symptoms.

Please be on the lookout for any of the following cat behaviors that signal your cat needs veterinary support:

• Changes in the intake of water, whether increased or decreased drinking, can signal significant health problems
• Marked decrease in activity, such as sudden lethargy, or withdrawal, should be addressed ASAP
• Sudden weight gain or loss
• Bad breath
• Preference for chewing on one side of the mouth, or lack of appetite
• Changes in sleeping or grooming habits
• Litter box issues, like missing the box or crying out when inside
• Communication changes, from either chatty to quiet or the opposite

You know your cat the best. Even if you think that something just isn’t right with your pet, it’s best to err on the side of caution and schedule an appointment.
